my husband needs help with his drinking as well as other problems in his life. we dont know what kind of doctor to see

From what I’ve read, psychologists are better off getting at least a Masters degree, and many, including my own psychologist who I just stopped seeing, earned their PhD. The Addictions Counselor probably needs a bachelors or a Masters tops to find work in a hospital or another center. The required degrees are basically the same though. I want to become a Drug and Alcohol Addictions Counselor because it would be more fulfilling to save lives that to listen to everyone’s sob stories, which is usually helpful to them, but just not as fulfilling for me. However, I typed in “Adult Psychologist” in New York and it says they earn 108,000…and Drug and Addictions Counselors, who seem like they should be in higher demand, only earn 51,000. What is up?

My best friend is very addicted to alcohol. How can I help in this personal issue? I work near Alpharetta, Georgia. Are there any local government or voluntary or private companies that can help me with this?

I need some websites, on medical info., concerning this question. I used Wikipedia, as a ref., for my class. But, my instructor, said, I have to have backing, for my answer. I am do an analysis, on alcohol addiction. I am using the section, on diverse explanations, the model method, to explain my answer to this question. Alcohol the Substance the Addiction and the Solution

Please no insulting answers. This is a genuine question that deserves an answer beyond “stop drinking”.

I drink one night a week, at most. The frequency isn’t a problem, it is the volume. I never stop with a drink or too. I never stop until I’m either sick or in a fight. Are there treatment centers that specialize in binge drinking? It seems like I would not qualify for treatment services based on addiction.

I do know that it takes more than just shying away from the substance that the person is addicted to. I just want to know what specific steps the person will have to take in order for him to be on his way to recovery.

I am comparing alcohol and drug counselor’s that are in recovery for addiction and those that are not. Getting stuck on the pro’s for “not in recovery” counselors. Any in put would help. Thanks.

Here is a list of common things of incorrect things I hear people say:

- it is a gateway drug (btw this is ridiculous because there is no direct mechanism in the brain that would cause it to be a gateway drug,) it gives a different high than other drugs and so people would not do a different drug to get the same or better high , cocaine may be a gateway to meth but that is only because the highs they produce are similar.

- legalizing it will make everyone smoke all day and nothing will get done (this is FALSE because studies have shown that legalizing it wont increase use and this is indeed the case for the Dutch)

- one marijuana joint is the same for your lungs as a pack of cigarettes (this is misleading because cigarette smokers will smoke more cigarettes than the number of joints a marijuana user will smoke)

- it is addictive (it is not addictive, I have watched the show Intervention and none of them were addicted to marijuana, I have never heard of someone whos life was ruined by marijuana addiction, I have heard of people going in and out of rehab or living on the streets due to cocaine, alcohol, meth, heroin, and others , but I have never heard of a single marijuana addiction story ( i have heard of people missing marijuana but it has been shown that this is different than addiction).

- it kills brain cells (this is FALSE, this has never been scientifically proven)

- it makes people lazy (marijuana does not make people lazy, it makes people giggly or calm (depending on the setting and the person) or a feeling of floating but it does not leave you lazy once you sobered up)

-only losers smoke pot (not true at all)

- marijuana increases schizophrenia 40% (this has been shown to be not true)

- it may causes a bunch of miscellaneous problems in some people (this is exaggerated , nearly every single medicine will have rare negative side effects that sound bad )

I have yet to hear a good reason to ban marijuana.

We’re really plumb out of money, but I also need to get my husband treated for his alcoholism. I fear that if I don’t put him inside an alcohol rehab soon, he’ll get worse. He’s gotten more violent lately, and I just don’t want this to continue on. Help please.
