What are some careers I could consider?

28 Apr

I’m looking for a somewhat non-traditional job. I very much enjoy helping people in any way that I can, and was planning on going to school for addictions counseling and phlebotomy.

I am also a writer, photographer, and have always wanted to travel the world.

I’ve looked up so many different types of careers and schooling, but I guess I’m just wondering if I could get an outside opinion on careers you might think would fit me, or that I may be interested in. It would be very helpful, thank you.

Would you consider a diabetic who can’t control their lust for sweets a drug addict?

06 Mar

My mother in law forbid me to bring beer to her house last Christmas. I drink maybe once a month and never get drunk (3-4 beers tops). She’s just very religious. So in turn, I forbid her from bringing chocolate bars into my home since she’s a diabetic and it actually harms her. She’s always eying up sweets, so I compare her to a drug addict. Needless to say, she doesn’t appreciate this analogy. What do you think.

Consider These Points When Looking For Heroin Addiction Treatment In Tennessee

12 Jan

When you are considering options for heroin addiction treatment in Tennessee, you have to know that you cannot use the usual approaches that go with searching options for other addiction treatments. The main reason behind this is that heroin is an opiate, a drug that acts in a very different manner on the human body. For this reason, treating heroin addiction also becomes quite a different issue.

There are special treatment centers that are dedicated to heroin addiction treatment in Tennessee. When looking for options on heroin treatment, you have to consider these treatment centers. However, you have to make sure of several other points too.

One of the first things that you have to consider here is that the treatment center must be really dedicated to heroin treatment. It is justified to reiterate the point that heroin addiction cannot be handled by a normal treatment center. Let’s take a look at the manner in which a heroin addiction works to understand this better.

When a person consumes heroin, the substance attacks specific regions in the central nervous system and makes the brain secrete the substance known as dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for the sense of pleasure that the person experiences. As long as the person consumes heroin, this substance is released and the person feels the euphoric sense of pleasure that is so well-associated with the heroin addiction. However, as the person consumes more and more of heroin, the brain gets immune to it and the secretion of dopamine dwindles. When that happens, the patient is no longer able to feel the same high as he or she experience with heroin before. This is the time when the patient considers taking in more of the substance.

This is why heroin users will soon begin consuming higher amounts of heroin than they did earlier. This can happen quite fast, depending on the physical and the mental constitution of the patient. Over time, the patient might start using perilously high amounts of heroin. But though the brain asks for more of heroin, the body may not be able to support it. This is where tragedies such as heroin overdose deaths can happen.

Understanding how heroin works on the human system is vitally important when you are deciding a treatment option for the substance because the way the treatment works depends on it. You have to ensure that the center for heroin addiction treatment in Tennessee you are considering is capable to deal with the way heroin functions in the body.

Heroin treatment is difficult because of the way it attacks the central nervous system and makes it feel that it cannot persist without the substance in the body. That is the reason you have to check up on the expertise the treatment center has in handling heroin addiction treatment. You have to make sure that the center really has a license for conducting heroin addiction treatment in Tennessee. Also check the credentials of the treatment providers if you can. They must ideally be certified through a center such as the American Society of Addiction Medicine and must have an experience in providing heroin addiction treatment to people in the past.

Another thing that you will have to educate yourself on is the two kinds of treatments that are used to treat a heroin dependency in the state. Since about 30 years now, methadone has been the drug of choice for the treatment of heroin. This substance is an opiate just like heroin is and when it is provided in the form of a maintenance medication therapy, it can reduce the urge the person has for heroin. However, it is a highly addictive drug in itself, and must be provided in an inpatient treatment format with constant medical supervision. It must never be stopped abruptly, because that could cause a withdrawal too.

On the other hand, there’s buprenorphine, a relatively new method of treatment, which has been only recently approved for addiction treatment in Tennessee. People are favoring buprenorphine recently because it can be provided in an outpatient format, it is not as addictive as methadone (though it is an opiate too), it can be easily worked out from the system and it does not react fatally with some other prescription drugs that the person might be taking.

You need to check whether you would like to go ahead with a methadone treatment or a buprenorphine treatment. Read about these on the Internet and ask a counselor for substance abuse treatment in Tennessee about which treatment program you should go ahead with.

10 Essential Things to Consider When Seeking Help Through Addiction Treatment

06 Dec

Your life has become unmanageable, and you now realize that your best thinking gets you loaded, or even worse, sick and behind bars. Acceptance is the first step in treating an addiction. As the saying goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The road to recovery may seem long and arduous, but it is necessary if you want to live a long and happy life. Recovery is a process, and you want to make sure that you evaluate a rehabilitation or treatment program carefully before you get into something that does not ideally suit your specific needs. The following is a list of things to consider when choosing a treatment program.

1.) WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

The first thing you really need to do is be honest with yourself. What is your problem? Are you addicted to alcohol, drugs, or a combination? For example, alcoholics who also use cocaine may require a treatment program that will deal with cross addiction. To get the help you need, you need to be completely honest with yourself. Not to worry, as it is often difficult to self diagnose, good rehabilitation centers will perform an assessment to assist you. In the end, you need to find a facility that will address all of your problems. If not, your efforts could be to no avail. Drug addiction is cunning, baffling and powerful. Therefore, you will need the best care possible to have a chance at recovering from an addiction.

2.) WHAT KIND OF PROGRAM IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Generally speaking, if you are at the point where you are no longer able to manage your life, it is time to seek the assistance of a qualified treatment program. Speak with your doctor; he or she can refer you to a psychiatrist or counselor that will know more about what kind of program would best suit your needs. Usually an inpatient program is preferred over outpatient. Even after you have completed your treatment, you will most likely need to attend support groups, because the most important thing to remember is that you cannot recover from an addiction alone.

3.) WHAT CAN YOU AFFORD?

It would be nice if finances did not have to figure into something as important as recovering from a problem like drug or alcohol addiction, but the reality of the situation is that cost is a factor for many people. If you are fortunate enough to have medical insurance that covers rehabilitation and treatment programs, speak with an insurance representative about your options. Perhaps they have a list of approved places where you can go for treatment. If you do not have insurance, then you need to look into ways to finance the treatment you need. Make sure that you find a place that has a combination of quality care and affordability if price is a concern.

4.) WILL YOU REQUIRE MEDICAL CARE?

Addiction is a multi-faceted issue and concerns sometimes arise depending upon the severity of the addiction, as well as what the individual in question is addicted to. Recovery from an addiction sometimes requires medication to help the process along. Methadone is often given to heroin addicts to wean them off of drugs. Campral is one of several choices offered to alcoholics in order to help limit cravings for alcohol, especially in cases of severe alcoholism. Addicts may also have other health-related issues that may require a doctor’s attention. In short, make sure that the rehabilitation program you select has the proper medical care you may require.

5.) WHO WILL BE TAKING CARE OF YOU?

Recovery is serious business and requires serious people to help you through this transitional point in your life. However, you have decided that you need help; you are spending your hard-earned money and taking the needed time to straighten your life out. It is of paramount importance that you feel comfortable where you will be receiving your treatment. Visit the facilities you are considering to see the staff in action. Your comfort during this time is essential and the importance of feeling good about the environment where you will begin your recovery cannot be stressed enough.

6.) WHAT WILL YOUR TREATMENT ENTAIL?

Before you go to any treatment center, you need to know how they are going to help you. More than likely, you will be assessed, and then given an outline that lays out what you will require in regard to your treatment. You must know how the treatment center plans on helping you before you start your treatment.

7.) WHAT WILL A TYPICAL DAY CONSIST OF?

Just as important as knowing what kind of treatment you will be receiving is knowing how you will be receiving it. Ask questions about your daily schedule and routine. Make sure that what they have planned for you will be easy to adjust to and beneficial for your overall well-being. However, keep in mind that these professionals are there to help you and that there are usually good reasons for why the schedule is arranged the way it is.

8.) WHO ELSE WILL BE THERE?

In order for your recovery to go smoothly, it is good to know who else will be in the program with you. An ideal rehabilitation program segregates the sexes completely. This way, there are fewer distractions in general. Human beings are sexual creatures, and being treated with members of the opposite sex could potentially inhibit the recovery process.

9.) HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

As a patient, you must know from the outset how long the treatment will take. You must have a clear idea of when the program begins and ends, and have goals in mind as you work through your recovery. Having a timeline for your stay will help keep things in perspective, and is also a great way to keep track of your progress.

10.) WILL MY LOVED ONES BE INVOLVED?

Every addict’s family and friends are already involved in the process just by knowing and caring for the addict. Some treatment centers believe in keeping the family out of the loop in the addict’s recovery. Others believe family involvement is essential in the recovery process. Depending on how you feel about this, you may or may not wish for your family to be involved. You must keep in mind, however, that your family and friends have been deeply affected by your addiction, and that they are sometimes suffering just as much or more than you. Eventually, this will have to be resolved. With the help of professionals, this resolution may come along with greater ease.

Rehabilitation and recovery for an addict is an ongoing, lifelong, process. The importance of getting off on the right foot cannot be understated. Research your options, and consider these ten items when looking for a place to begin your journey.

Points To Consider When You Are Planning Heroin Addiction Treatment

30 Oct

Planning a heroin addiction treatment is not at all easy. This is one of the most serious kinds of addictions known to humankind. Heroin is an opioid. As soon as it is consumed by the person, it attacks specific areas of the central nervous system of the person. This causes the brain to release a hormone known as dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for creating the rush of pleasure in the person. That is the reason the person develops a craving to consume more and more of the substance. The brain keeps asking for more of heroin so that it can feel the rush of pleasure that it creates.

However, as time passes and the person uses more and more of heroin, the brain slowly gets used to the feeling of pleasure created by the heroin. This is the time when the person steps up the dosage in order to experience the same feelings as before. A common pattern with heroin usage is that the person continually keeps stepping up the dosage because of the insistence of the brain. However, the body will not be able to accept this heightened amount and it may snap when an overdose occurs.

The gist of all this is that heroin is a very strongly addicting substance. The very fact that it has permanent effects on the brain indicates that this addiction is difficult to conquer.

Hence, when you are looking for an option on heroin addiction treatment, one of the most important things for you to consider is that the treatment center should be equipped at handling the process. They must have a special qualification for dispensing heroin addiction treatment in the respective state and must also have an experience in providing it. There are many subtle points involved in heroin addiction treatment and it is important for you to check out that the center is equipped in providing the treatment.

Bear in mind that all treatment centers that handle drug or alcohol addiction treatment will have a general license for conducting their operations. But, heroin addiction being quite intense, centers that handle this treatment must have a special license for heroin treatment.

It is also important that the program implemented by the center must be appropriate to the person’s preferences and requirements. It is better if you can find a qualified treatment program. A qualified program is that which has been tested and tried by the state substance abuse experts and have approved of it. When the patient is with such a program, there is a better guarantee of it working. You can get a list of the qualified treatment programs for heroin addiction on federal substance abuse websites such as those of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Institute of Drug Abuse and the National Clearinghouse. Each state has some modifications based on their own internal policies, but these federal websites can provide a good overview of how the treatment is provided at a national level.

Another thing that you must think about is the type of medication the center will use. Methadone is the more common form of treatment but it is considered outdated now. Methadone is a highly addictive substance itself, and it is necessary that only a trained treatment provider and a federally approved center provide it. Also, some people complain of methadone withdrawal when the treatment is suddenly reduced or stopped.

The other option is buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is much less habit forming in comparison with methadone and so it can be provided as an outpatient treatment too. Today, buprenorphine has become quite popular especially because of the FDA approval of Subutex and Suboxone. Subutex is pure buprenorphine while Suboxone is buprenorphine in combination with naloxone. The naloxone takes care of the fact that the person does not get addicted to the medication.

You have to decide what kind of medication will be suitable for the patient’s condition. You can do your research on the Internet and get in touch with a treatment counselor who can guide you on it. Remember that the kind of medication you select will influence the length of the treatment and the costs involved. You can find a lot of options on buprenorphine treatment, even from the website of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration itself. You can use the Facility Locator link on this website to find out a suitable program in your own state.

The most important thing when you are deciding heroin addiction treatment is to learn how the program works and then decide your options. Use the Internet and offline resources to conduct your research.

What You Must Consider When Planning Heroin Addiction Treatment

29 Oct

A heroin addiction is definitely one of the most dreaded kinds of addiction, the only solace being that there are various methods of treatment for it. However, it is not quite so easy to plan out a heroin addiction treatment. Here are some things that you need to keep in mind.

All Heroin Addiction Treatment Programs are not the Same

One of the primary things that you must know is that there is widespread difference in the ways treatment centers implement programs for removing a heroin dependency. Even if on the face of it these methods may seem to be the same, there are various subtle differences. Like, there may be different ways in which the detox treatment program is implemented. The mode in which the medications are provided may be different. The nursing care may be 24/7 in one center while it may be only for a few hours in some other center. Some center may be using conventional methods for treatment while some will use holistic approaches.

In this way, no two programs for heroin addiction will be the same. You need to check out the websites of the centers in thorough detail so that you know what you are getting. If you are planning the treatment for someone, you have to keep the requirements of that person in mind and then proceed. This will ensure that the program is suitable for the person’s needs.

Select the Right Medicinal Approach for the Treatment

You must know that there are two main kinds of medication therapies used for heroin addiction treatment. One of them uses methadone while the other uses buprenorphine. Methadone is a very old kind of medication which is still considered to be quite potent. It is an opioid like heroin itself, and as long as it is taken, the person does not feel the urge for the substance. But methadone needs to be provided in an inpatient setting only because it is habit forming also, and if the dosage is suddenly reduced or stopped completely, the patient will feel a withdrawal for methadone itself.

Buprenorphine is a newer method of heroin treatment and is widely employed in most treatment centers today. It works on the same principles that methadone does but it is not as habit forming as methadone is and hence it can be administered in a somewhat liberal manner. It can be used in outpatient treatment programs for heroin. However, there is some criticism on buprenorphine because it is a milder form of treatment.

You have to research on the options well and then see which medication will be suitable for the patient. The form the treatment will take and also the expenses will depend on what medication the treatment center will be using.

Check the Licenses and Other Qualifying Information for the Center

It is absolutely important that every addiction treatment center in the US must be licensed through the state they are operating in. But with heroin addiction treatment, the requirements are more stringent. Here it is necessary that the center has a special license for heroin addiction treatment. You have to check this information either on the website of the center or, if it is not mentioned there, by calling them up at the number on the website.

Additionally, it is wise to check whether the treatment providers are qualified or not. You may want to check their qualifications. It is ideal if they are qualified through a national organization like the American Society of Addiction Medicine. It is also a good idea to see their experience in dealing with heroin addiction treatment.

Next, check the accreditations that the treatment center has. If the center is accredited through a state or a national organization, it reflects positively on the genuineness of their programs. Check also what kind of affiliates they have. More affiliates mean they are a well-supported and well-networked program. In that case, if there is some difficulty, they can ask for help from each other.

Get in Touch with your Insurance Company

This is a point that most people forget to consider. But, insurance companies will not cover for all kinds of treatment. There are some centers that they will not consider. Your best bet is to speak to them at length before considering the treatment program and go ahead with it only if they are willing to provide the necessary cover. If they are not doing that, you can ask them to suggest some centers within their network and then you can see whether you would wish to use them.

Some Factors to Consider Before Entering a Heroin Addiction Treatment

19 Sep

Heroin addiction is among the severe type of addictions that many are aware of. Placing a person into such treatment is not an effortless task. Once the heroin has been consumed by a person, it will target certain parts of the body’s central nervous system. This will signal the brain to discharge a hormone that is called dopamine.

Dopamine is the hormone responsible for producing a feeling of pleasure in a person. This is the reason why the individual who has taken the substance will crave for more of it. The brain will signal for the person to take more of the heroin because of the pleasure feeling it generates. This leads to addiction.

However, as the person gets more addicted to the heroin, the brain is gradually getting used to the effect it produces. Because of that the person will increase the dosage he is taking to be able to achieve the similar feeling he is experiencing before. The person will continuously increase the dosage of the heroin in order to obtain satisfaction to the brain. But the body will be unable to bear the raise in the amount of heroin and it will eventually shatter once the body has achieved an overdose.

This substance is truly addicting and it has lasting brain effects that signify the addiction to be a complex battle to win over. Hence, if you are seeing heroin addiction treatment as an option, you should ensure also that the place is equipped at managing the procedures. The treatment center should possess the expertise in that area. There are numerous delicate parts concerned in heroin addiction programs and it is vital for you to verify whether the center is able to provide their clients with high standard treatments.

It is important to remember that drug and alcohol addiction treatment centers should acquire a general license in order to carry out their operations. But in the case of heroin addiction treatment, the centers should possess a special license for it.

The program provided in a particular center must meet the client’s preferences and situations. Competent programs are the ones which are tried and tested by the state’s substance abuse experts. They must be approved also by these professionals. If a person is enrolled in this kind of programs, there is a big guarantee that is functioning at its best.

The kind of medication provided in the center should be checked as well. Try to do your research online and try contact a treatment counselor to have guidance about the medicines to be used. Keep in mind that the choice of medication will affect the duration of the treatment and the prices involved. Learn how the program works before finalizing your selections.

Would You Consider Addiction Treatment As One Of The Ways By Which We Can Foster A Healthy Society?

06 Sep

I want to get your opinions. How can addiction treatment benefit society as a whole and not just the patient? I’m planning on doing a paper on this to get extra credit for a class of mine. I just want to see what other people think. Thanks.
