I’m going to be a senior in college with a major in psychology. I want to be an occupational therapist and I was wondering what steps I need to take in order to fulfill this goal.
For example, how much schooling is required, what prerequisite courses I need to take, what I could do in the mean time…
It’s obviously too late for me to switch majors so the fastest way possible is best!

The counseling part of the treatment program is very important to keep the patients and their families motivated. This way the patient will stay away from taking addictive substances and will also be able to lead a normal life after the treatment gets over.
In recent times, there has been a great demand for providing outpatient treatment for people who are suffering from an addiction. This is owing to the busy schedule that people follow. Even people who are in an addiction will not want to sacrifice their careers. This is how the trend is today. People may be totally entrenched in their addiction on a particular substance, but still they would shudder at the thought of giving up their professional life on account of that. Definitely this does not allow them to think about the modes of addiction treatment in which they will need to be isolated from their family, social and professional life.
The main reason for the popularity of the outpatient programs is that they are too liberal. Patients are allowed to stay in their own homes and they have to visit the treatment centers a few times a week. Each session is of a few hours. However, there are different outpatient programs. Here is a brief look into them.
Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program
The basic form of the outpatient addiction treatment program does not go on for more than nine to ten hours a week. This program will require the patient to visit the center for three to four days in a week and the sessions will be about two to four hours each time.
The main aspect of this program is to counsel the patient on methods to come out of their addiction. They are usually given individual counseling in this program; the main intention is to look into the emotional issues that may be causing them to use the substance and to help them to overcome those issues.
This is a very mild form of treatment; in fact it is the mildest of all forms of addiction treatment in the US. The program is designed for people who are not in very strong conditions of addiction. These people must not have any health complications yet and they must be mentally quite stable to bear the treatment and make a determination to stay away from the substance.
Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment Program
This is a more intensive form of treatment than the previously described program. Here the patient is made to visit the center for more than nine to ten hours a week. The number of days that the person is supposed to visit is also more and the length of sessions is also more. The overall treatment program is more severe. Counseling for helping people overcome their emotional issues still forms a major part of the treatment process, but there are other things that might be included too. In some cases, there might be a group therapy in which several people in the same stages of addiction are educated about eh addiction together. They are shown how their addictions can be devastating to their condition and how they can come out of it if they made an effort. They are actually trained on the various methods that help them to curb the urges of the substance of addiction.
This program is designed for people who are in more severe conditions of addiction. Some people who have used a detox program will take this kind of treatment up as a means of aftercare. However, it is important that the addiction must not be too severe. The patient must be in a healthy frame of body and mind in order to respond to the treatment.
Day Addiction Treatment Program
This has become very popular in recent times. Here the patient will be required to visit the center on a daily basis for three to four hours each day. The program includes counseling, group education and maintenance medication. In some cases, the patient might be provided with an outpatient form of detox too. In many ways, it is a complete addiction treatment program designed for people who are in severe conditions of addiction. Moreover, the program follows flexible hours in most centers. People can choose their timing. This allows the patients to keep up with their social obligations even as they are using this form of treatment because they do not need to be isolated in a rehab center during their recovery process.
People who are suffering from mild to moderate conditions of addiction can use this form of recovery. They may also be counseled for their mental issues and some health problems can be treated alongside. In this way, some centers may use a dual diagnostic approach when providing a day treatment program.
You must know that the term “outpatient treatment program” is an umbrella term. In the state of Iowa, for example, you are going to find different kinds of programs that are all known as outpatient treatment programs. The basic pattern is the same; the patient continues living at home while attending the treatment center for some days to get the treatment for the addiction. However, there are different types based on how frequently the center calls in the patient for the treatment and what the program actually comprises.
Here we discuss three different kinds of outpatient treatment programs for drug addiction treatment in Iowa.
Outpatient Treatment Program
What is normally referred to as the outpatient treatment program for drug addiction treatment in Iowa is a program that is conducted for up to nine hours a week. The patient is called in at the treatment center for three to four sessions in the week each consisting of 2 to 3 hours duration. The total time for the week does not go beyond nine hours.
During this program, the patient is mostly counseled on methods to keep out of the addiction. They are trained on certain techniques and therapies that can help them lose their temptation for the substance. They are also trained on how to make their lives more socially meaningful so that they keep themselves occupied and do not find the pangs of the addiction anymore.
Detox is usually not a part of this program. This is the mildest form of addiction treatment program, which basically deals with the recovery of people in simple forms of drug abuse rather than addiction.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
The intensive outpatient treatment program is basically an extended version of the previous program. Much of the same approaches are used in this program too, but they are conducted in a more rigid and intensive manner. The frequency of the meetings is more too and so is the duration; the program can go for up to twenty hours a week even.
Here, a part of the program is conducted in a group format. A group of people with similar kinds of addictions are called in together and they are educated on what the addiction is all about. They are provided a classroom kind of training where they can understand where their addiction will lead them. But the program is optimistic, because patients are told that there are methods that can bring them into treatment and what those methods are. It includes all the trainings and that are imparted in the previous program, but in a stricter and more intensive format.
Day Treatment Program
This is the most stringent kind of drug addiction treatment in Iowa that is provided on an outpatient basis. This program allows the patient to stay at home during the treatment, but the patient has to come to the center almost every day. This daily program provides treatment sessions to the patient for three to four hours each day. Hence, the program is quite intensive. It is an apt program for people who are in mild to moderate conditions of addiction.
The program consists of three vital elements. First, there is a detox program that is conducted on an outpatient basis. The patient is provided with a maintenance medication that can help them keep away from the substance. As long as the maintenance medication is taken, the patient will not feel any temptation for the substance. This allows the substance to be worked out from the system of the patient.
The second part of the program is the substance abuse education. Here the patient is taught in a classroom format what the substance addiction is all about, how it can affect the body, how it can affect personal, social and professional life and, most importantly, how it can be treated. The program teaches people that substance addiction is quite vicious, but it can certainly be treated.
The third part consists of counseling. This is done on an individual basis. The crux of this part of outpatient drug addiction treatment in Iowa is to understand the patient’s underlying emotional issues that are keeping them in the addiction and help them to come out of it. The patient is handled by psychiatrists in some cases who can counsel them on how to come out of their mental conditions and preoccupations that might be retaining the urge for the substance within them.
There are various kinds of outpatient treatment programs for drug addiction treatment in Iowa, but you have to first confirm whether such a treatment mode would be appropriate for the patient. A counselor on substance abuse treatment will be able to help you arrive at the right decision.

There are various kinds of recovery measures for addiction treatment being used in Arkansas. Most of the methods that are used within this state are very strictly dependent on the rules set by the substance abuse authorities such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Clearinghouse and the National Institute of Drug Abuse. These are the programs that are called as the qualified treatment programs. These programs are the more popular ones because they are set according to state rules so people are better assured of their success. At the same time, these programs are considered more favorably by the insurance providers and they are also cheaper methods of treatment.
However, there are also various kinds of specialized programs in the state. These programs are called as the nonqualified treatment programs. Some of these programs include the herbal detoxification methods, the massage therapies, the spiritual methods of treatment, relaxation processes and many more.
There are more specialized programs for addiction treatment in Arkansas which directly cater to a particular category of people. These programs include special methods to help these groups of people with their various conditions.
The following are some of the specialized forms of addiction treatment that you will find in Arkansas.
Teen Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment programs that are designed for the teenagers are different from the adult based programs in that they will have special counseling programs in which they will try to make the young patients aware of the problem they are in. In most cases, it is observed that teenagers have some or the other kind of emotional problem that keeps them with their dependency. Family neglect could be one such issue. For the teenager, their addiction could be a way to seek respite from this problem that they are facing. However, the addiction treatment that is specifically designed for their purposes will have certain measures to help them out of their emotional hangups.
Detoxification needs to be implemented in a different manner for these patients too. This is because their young age will not allow every kind of medication to be used on them. There will be some differences in the implementation of the process too, because harsh methods cannot be used.
Also, there needs to be an emphatic aftercare program. Without that, there is a danger that the patient will have a relapse with the addiction, which will make all the treatment efforts go waste.
Senior Addiction Treatment
This is on the other end of the spectrum. The seniors who are with addiction problems are usually victims of several secondary problems such as prescription drug abuse and might have various kinds of health complications and mental issues. When these problems exist, it becomes difficult to bring these people out of their dependency. They may also have a long-standing emotional connection with their addiction problem. Also, there is a strong chance that their addiction is a long-term addiction that they are harboring since several years. If that happens, treatment becomes all the more difficult.
This is manifested in the different kind of detoxification program that needs to be used for senior persons. They will need to be provided different kinds of medications and will also need greater amount of medical care and counseling if they are to go through the program. In some cases, the dual diagnosis treatment will become necessary for their condition.
Depending on what kind of addiction they are in, the treatment for their condition will be implemented. They might also need psychiatric counseling in order to pull them out of the emotional issues that work at keeping them with their addiction problem.
Thus, there are different kinds of addiction treatment programs in the state that are specially designed for treating specific kinds of patients. There are many more programs that aim to cure people on the basis of their gender, their sexual preference, specific health complications, mental illnesses and even their religious affiliation. Using such a program becomes a better idea because it allows the people to be what they are and the treatment providers understand the specific conditions that influence their treatment. An example is how a gay oriented treatment program will prevent problems such as homophobia creeping up in the treatment program.
The benefit of seeking an addiction treatment program in Arkansas is that you can get a program that is most customized for your needs. This is what makes for more effective treatment for your condition.
Addiction treatment in Missouri is not uni-dimensional. If you read about the addiction treatment program in Missouri, you will find that there are a diverse set of options and each of them run on several parallel lines. Since long, Missouri has been considering addiction as a mental ailment, akin to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder that the person cannot snap out of it singularly. It requires are lot of grit and effort to bring people out of this condition. And for that, concerted efforts are required not just in cleansing the patient bodily for what toxins the addiction must have accumulated within it, but also to counsel the person mentally in order to make them forget the temptation of the substance for good.
This is the approach of addiction treatment in Missouri which you must know if you are trying to get a person from your family into addiction treatment here. You must know what the treatment program is capable of doing.
There are various options for addiction treatment in Missouri, whether you are looking for your own treatment or the treatment for a member within the family who you are responsible for. What you must know here is that each treatment program is quite different. They have been set depending on the nature of the person’s addiction and the extent to which the addiction has consumed the patient. Even when you visit a counselor for substance abuse treatment in Missouri, the first thing they would do is to assess and analyze the condition of the patient’s addiction and then only will they suggest a treatment center. This clearly indicates that the treatment centers in the state are based on the nature and extent of the person’s addiction.
Now, based on that, there are the following kinds of addiction treatment centers in Missouri. You have to see what they can do for you, check out the magnitude of your own addiction and then make the decision to join into one of the programs.
Outpatient Treatment Program in Missouri
This is the simplest and the most convenient kind of addiction treatment program in Missouri. As the name suggests, the patient here continues to live at home, but has to visit the treatment center for about nine to ten hours in a week. To make the program more convenient, the patient can choose these timings and the days on which they can attend the program.
The program focuses more on counseling rather than detox treatment. This is because the people who come in here have quite manageable levels of addiction. They are supposed to be mentally and bodily fit so that they can go through this treatment program. People who have just completed a detox program may enroll into these outpatient treatment programs in Missouri. These people are permitted because after the detox they will be in a manageable state of addiction.
There is also a more severe version of the outpatient treatment program in Missouri, which is simply known as the intensive outpatient treatment program. The number of hours a person is supposed to attend treatment here is more than that at the mainstream outpatient treatment program.
Inpatient Treatment Program in Missouri
This is typically for people who are in a moderate to severe stage of addiction. This program will isolate the patient from family and friends and will keep them in a treatment center. One of the first things that will be done here is a complete detoxification program for the patient, depending on the patient’s nature of addiction. The detox may take anywhere between three days and three weeks because each person will go through a different extent of withdrawal.
After the withdrawal symptoms have been effectively looked into, the patient will be referred to an aftercare program. This could be done in an outpatient or residential treatment center, depending on how the patient took the detox treatment.
Residential Treatment Program in Missouri
People who are at really uncontrollable stages of addiction will be recommended a residential treatment program. This is a community based treatment, where after a detox program, the patient will live in companionship with other people who are undergoing a similar method of treatment. The detox here can be longer than the normal because of the long nature of addiction that has existed in the person. At the same time, the counseling treatment program that will follow the detox will be longer and more elaborate. In some cases, residential treatment programs can spread out to up to a year. But after the completion of a successful residential program, there are very few people in Missouri who have made a relapse into the addiction.
Outpatient treatment programs are always favored because of the additional amount of liberty that they give to the patients. A person who is going through an outpatient treatment program will not need to be isolated in a center but will continue living in his or her home and go through the treatment. They will not need to be away from their family and friends either. However, these programs are not meant for everybody. People who are with an addictive habit since a long period of time will not find them effective because of the lack of continuous medical supervision. At the same time, people who have some coexisting physical or psychiatric problem will find treatment through such a method difficult too, because they will need someone to supervise their condition constantly.
In order to answer all these needs, the outpatient alcohol addiction treatment in West Virginia is implemented through a variety of methods. The following is a brief idea of different outpatient programs used in the state.
Outpatient Alcohol Addiction Treatment in West Virginia
The basic outpatient program is provided for about nine to ten hours a week. This program is staggered into three to four weekly sessions, each of two to four hours duration. During these sessions, the patients are counseled for methods to come out of their craving or alcohol. In some cases, there might be some emotional problems that might be weighing on the person’s mind which might be responsible in keeping them with the addiction. The counseling sessions will try to analyze these problems and help the patient to avoid resorting to alcoholism as an answer to their problems.
Another part of this program is the education process, where the patients will be trained on what the addiction is all about and what kind of repercussions it can have on various aspects of their life. Knowing the practical information about the addiction helps the patient to build a stronger determination to stay away from the substance.
Intensive Outpatient Alcohol Addiction Treatment in West Virginia
As the name suggests, this treatment program is an extension of the basic outpatient format of treatment. Here the patient will need to follow a longer session of treatment, which might go up to fifteen to twenty hours a week. The program is especially designed for people who are in stronger forms of addiction.
One difference in the intensive outpatient format is that there might be a detox program provided too, but in the outpatient manner. Patients might be put up on certain kinds of medication that will help them come out of their craving and thus stay away from using the substance. However, there will not be any constant medical attention because the program is outpatient in nature. Instead, the patient will be monitored during the treatment sessions, whenever in the week they occur.
Day Treatment Program in West Virginia
This is by far the most comprehensive form of alcohol addiction treatment in West Virginia that is provided on an outpatient basis. This program is well suited to patients who are in moderate conditions of addiction. The program is usually a daily program which is conducted for about three to four hours in a day. The best part is that these hours are mostly flexible, which allows the patients to choose whatever timings they want so that they can continue their social obligations such as a job or an educational course.
The day treatment program has everything that an outpatient program has but on a more magnified scale. There is a detox with constant monitoring of the patient’s condition and also regular monitoring of the other lifestyle aspects of the person that might be having an effect on their addiction.
Counseling is also an important part of this program. It is carried out in much the same manner as the counseling in the other programs, and sometimes psychiatric treatment is also made available to the patient if they are suffering from certain kinds of mental illnesses. One important aspect is that the family of the patient is made an important part of the treatment. They are trained how they must monitor the patient’s condition when he or she is at home so that they do not have a relapse into the addiction. At the same time, they are explained how to deal with the situation so that they do not develop any emotional problems themselves.
Hence, there are various kinds of outpatient programs for alcohol addiction treatment in West Virginia. You must research on them and take your pick according to their suitability.
The term outpatient treatment program is a term that used to describe various types of programs. In Connecticut, there are several kinds of programs that are known as outpatient treatments. However, the pattern for outpatient treatments is the same, wherein the patient lives at home and attends the treatment centers to be de addicted. There are different types of pictures that are based on the number of times that the center requires the patient for treatment and basically the other concepts of the treatment program. The different types of types of outpatient programs for the drug addiction treatment in Connecticut are:
Outpatient Treatment Program
This program can be carried for upto nine to ten hours in a week. The patient is required to be present at the treatment center for at least three to four sessions that consists for more than three to four hours duration. The total time spent may even be more than ten hours.
This program mainly contains procedures wherein the patient undergoes counseling to keep away from the addiction. They are given training in various concepts and techniques that will help them ward off the incessant need for the substance that they are addicted to. The therapy will also train them to enhance their social lives and add some meaning to their lives. Basically, they make people more sociable so that they do not stay alone and become readdicted to their substance abuse. The outpatient treatment program is not a part of the program. The outpatient treatment program is the softest form of addiction treatment. The outpatient program for drug addiction treatment in Connecticut may be termed as the simplest form of de-addiction program. This deals with people who are at the lowest rung of their drug addiction.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program
Intensive outpatient treatment programs are just an enhanced version of outpatient treatment programs. These programs use the same approach that is used by the outpatient treatment program. The extended program is much more rigid and strict as compared to the outpatient treatment program. Also, the very frequency of people meeting under the intensive outpatient treatment program is much more than the people going in for an outpatient treatment program. While the outpatient treatment can go for only nine to ten hours in a week, an intensive outpatient treatment program can go on for more than twenty hours in a week.
This is the strictest type of drug addiction that is provided to a patient going through the outpatient basis. Under this program, the patient stays at their residence and comes to the center on a more regular basis than either the outpatient or even the outpatient intensive program. Under this program, the treatment sessions last for almost three to four hours per day, making it the longest time frame for any outpatient treatment program. While the patient stays at their residence during the treatment, they are required to come to the treatment center almost everyday. The program is more intense than any other outpatient program, and therefore is good for people who have reached the middle level of their addiction.
The program for drug addiction treatment in Connecticut is made up of three basic elements. One of the first is the detox program. This program is conducted on an outpatient basis. The patient also received medicine for maintaining their addiction. This medicine helps them to keep away from the substance that they are addicted to. The maintenance medicine is quite important for the entire program, because as long as the patient takes the medication, they do not feel the need or urge for the substance. Therefore, the substance they are addicted to is worked out of the system by the maintenance program.
The second part of this program is the education about substance education. The patient is given all the information in a classroom format about the substance abuse and the problems that it causes to their body as well as their lives. The substance education mainly tells the patients how their addiction can be treated.
The third part is counseling. The counseling is done on an individual basis. The main part of the outpatient drug addiction treatment is that the patient should understand the problems created by the substance abuse. This program can also be said to be a psychological program, because it mainly understands the underlying emotional problems in the patient.
There are several types of outpatient treatment programs that go for drug addiction in Connecticut. However, we first have to confirm whether the treatment would be fitting for the patient or not. Therefore, the counselor should make the right decision.
It’s the same old story, yet another celebrity has entered rehab, again, or been arrested, again. Lindsey Lohan, the Olsen twins, Amy Winehouse, Brittney Spears, the list is endless. It seems a day doesn’t go by without at least one celebrity getting arrested for drug or alcohol abuse, or entering treatment for the umpteenth time. It seems addiction and entertainment have become intertwined. But you know better. You know addiction is no laughing matter and it’s more than just another headline to you. When addiction hits home, when the ugliness of drug or alcohol abuse become personal, you need real answers and real solutions, not just another empty promise.
A popular and common method of Addiction Treatment is to use drugs to combat drugs. Basically, in a medically supervised setting, clinical staff use a variety of drug therapies to combat the effects of withdrawal. But there is another approach, a more natural, highly effective approach that cleanses the system of drug residues while offering a step-by-step system for learning positive behaviors, replacing negative, addictive patterns with positive, life-changing techniques, which arm the recovering addict with the knowledge and certainty to lead a happy, addiction-free life.
The key is a holistic Drug Addiction program that addresses the whole person, including the reasons, thought processes and methods of addiction, not just the chemical dependency. The Narconon program does exactly that. Through the program, the substance abuser undergoes a holistic detoxification process and learns to communicate effectively with others, defining a set of personal ethical standards to become a responsible and contributing member of the community. If that sounds like a tall order, it is. And it’s not an easy road. But the Narconon program has met with success time and again.
The program starts out with detoxification in a social setting where participants, called “students,” take part in a non-medical, drug-free program of prescribed exercise, sauna and vitamin and mineral supplements. This first step serves to remove the student from the negative environments that encourage substance abuse, discontinue use of alcohol and other drugs, and begin the process of ridding their bodies of all toxic drug and alcohol residues. Students are closely monitored throughout the process and staff members keep track of withdrawal symptoms, vital signs and even hours of sleep and food and fluid intake. The staff offers techniques to improve comfort, reduce symptoms and increase awareness. Students don’t move on to the rest of the program until they are free of physical symptoms of acute withdrawal.
Once the detox process is complete, students move into a series of classes designed to examine the old behaviors, thought processes and lifestyle choices that led to addiction. In the process, students learn new ways of thinking and living, with a focus on personal responsibility as each student takes an active part in drafting their own recovery plan. This is not a one-size-fits-all Drug Addiction Treatment. Instead, the Narconon program is highly personal, with staff members working with students through group and individual activities. Students work through a series of “courses” which teach important life skills, and encourage the students to create their own set of values and ethics based on social “norms.”
The Drug Rehab program doesn’t stop there, since the focus is on effective and addiction-free reentry to society. The reentry plan is a therapeutic contract that specifies strategies that will be applied by the student once he returns to society. The first step of the reentry program is an assessment of the student’s participation in the detox and life course processes. Next, the focus is on involving family and loved ones, establishing healthy relationships. Third in this Dynamic Assessment is helping the student evaluate and understand the availability of drug-free individuals in their community, as well as resources for drug-free groups, further establishing healthy, addiction-free social behaviors. This is also the stage where work experience, skills and assessments of vocational abilities are done and an action plan created for seeking further training if needed, and ultimately, employment. Next, students make plans to engage in volunteer work and finally the plan addresses housing, transportation and financial needs.
When the graduate leaves the Narconon center, they are fully prepared to enter their new life, addiction free. But the care doesn’t stop there. Staff members from the Department of Success follow up on a regular basis, ensuring the graduate has continued support. Should the graduate not move successfully into their new life, the staff is there to help, addressing each situation on an individual basis. In serious cases, the graduate is encouraged to return to the center to work through the difficulties.
With the Narconon program, you aren’t going to find a cookie-cutter answer to addiction treatment. Instead you will find the most effective drug rehab program in the world, with a program that saves lives, doesn’t kick their participants out if they aren’t “cured” in 28 days, doesn’t replace one addiction with another, but instead treats the whole person, body mind and soul in a non-sectarian, non-judgmental environment. The end result? Graduates who have successfully achieved the stated goal of the Narconon program: A drug free individual contributing to society and leading a happy, drug-free life.
