I have a friend who has finally decided to get herself treated for her heroin addiction. I’ve heard a lot of good things about buprenorphine as a detox option, but I know that a lot of people are still banking on methadone as a good way of detoxing. I just want to know the disadvantages of using methadone so that I can warn my friend as well as help her in making a decision.

I was just wondering about this since my friend who uses heroin is scared that she might be pregnant. Will she be able to undergo addiction treatment if the pregnancy results turn positive? Will the medication have a negative effect on the baby? What if she doesn’t undergo addiction treatment? What are the risks for the baby? I know we’re sort of jumping to conclusions here, but still. Answers will be greatly appreciated.

My brother’s always gambling his money away. He incessantly asks our parents for money and then he just uses it so he could gamble. He would make up a variety of excuses to explain where the money went and my parents actually believe him. I think I’m now ready to tell my parents about what he really does. I’m doing a research on the drug ketamine and its addiction treatment. Is it true that there are no medications for this kind of addiction?

Or would this cause the baby more harm? I’ve heard that the baby can get addicted to methadone if the mother takes it while the baby is inside her womb. Should the woman just stop her use of drugs and wait until the baby gets born before she seeks treatment?

My mom lives there. I have just recently gotten word from my sister that she’s gotten involved in drugs. I think this is because of the fact that my father lives far away from us and has just abandoned us recently. That really crushed my mom. I hate knowing that this is happening to her. Government money for treatment is harder to come by. The Bush administration’s $12.7 billon drug-control budget request for 2007 earmarks 65% for interdiction and law enforcement and barely 35% for treatment and prevention. A National Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse report found that, of the $277 that each American paid on average in state taxes to deal with substance abuse and addiction in 1998, only $10 went toward treatment and prevention.

I don’t live there, but my friend who has just recently moved, does. He
had promised me that he’s going to get himself treated, just as long as
I help him with the process even though I’m far away. Any tips on how I
could find addiction treatment centers that he can check out?

My husband says he has an addiction to food and he just can’t stop eating. He even eats when he’s full. He says it’s not like a drug addiction where you just STOP because no one can quit eating. I don’t know what to do for him. I want him to go see a regular counselor, but he’s afraid that wouldn’t help.
