I’ve never gotten why so many people like hurting or killing animals just for laughs. I get hunting and understand population control but to kill just get your rocks off is just something that I can’t understand. So I’m curious what drives someone to abuse or kill an animal for fun?

To me it’s a power thing. Hurting or killing any innocent animal for kicks is just down right sick.
I worked in a shelter for many years and my heart wouldn’t break, it would shatter to see some animals come in so beaten up and frightened.
Hunting, like you said is ok for population control. But when an innocent animal is being hurt so badly that it can’t defend it’s self really makes me sick.

They hurt or kill animals because the are sick, like the other peeps said. I remember when there was a cat microwaved my a group of teens in a community around mine. That is awful and very very sad.

I used to work at Corrections (headquarters) and did a lot of research on various topics.
My opinion, is that some people like the control – over life or death – that they have by killing animals. And if it is a sadistic / torture killing – they may grow bored with it – and move onto doing the same thing to humans.
Some people have a hatred of others – so bad that they enjoy tormenting other people. It may be at several different levels.
I worked for the state at one agency and we had 3 levels of management that really enjoyed tormenting the employees. I was a supervisor and would be called in and given orders to cause the employees to have problems on the job. I would refuse. It was so bad that one employee came in and jumped out a 24th story window. The managers, just sat around and told jokes about it – that they missed seeing his face when he hit.
When I went to Corrections and learned more about criminals, I used to go home and tell my wife to be more careful when she dealt with people. That there were some people who just went out and hunted for someone they could torture and kill. My wife, would tell me I was over-reacting. Now retired, she has time to watch several of the true-crime shows on tv – and she now fusses at me “why didn’t you tell me they are this bad?”
There was a guy who killed for over 20 years in Kansas, his nickname was BTK – for Bind (tie up), Torture, Kill. (SEE THE LINK BELOW) Which is what he did to his victims. Come to find out, he held a high position in a local church. And when he was finally caught, he readily admitted that he would drive around looking for people who he could BTK. Then he would stalk them. And then attack them.
That is the true danger. People who do these types of things – look and act – just like you and me – until they are ready to do the abuse. So who can you really trust?
