What’s The Best Way To Give Up Addictions?
If you had a lottttt of addictions [trust me when I say a lot], would it be better if you gave everything up all at once, or if you did one thing at a time?

The best way to give up addictions is to go into rehab where they can take care of withdrawal from everything – or most everything- at once. They monitor you, medicate you the way you need to be medicated, and are gentle about it.
October 29, 2009 2:55 am | #1Trying to cold turkey it is foolish and can be avoided. Don’t do it alone- it can kill you. If you are an alcohol binge drinking addict, then go to AA and get support that way.
If you have addictive behaviors other than drugs and alcohol, find an addiction specialist and work through withdrawal and behavior modification with that person.
One at a time. I am a recovering alcoholic, sex addict, chocoholic and smoker. So far, I have gotten rid of the alcohol and drugs (These two have to be given up together or it won’t work) and the sex. Now I am working on the other two.
October 29, 2009 3:23 am | #2EDIT: Alcohol is a drug that’s why those two need to go at the same time. Reducing alcohol will ultimately lead to increases in the other drugs because they all do about the same thing. Self medication.
Also, if you have a depression or mental health issue, you have to take care of that at the same time as the alcohol & drugs because they influence each other. It is called dual diagnosis and many hospitals are equipped to help you deal with both at the same time.
All at once. It’s hard but you can do it! Trust me been there done that! My hardest habit to ever quit was smoking, (trust me I had alot of habits) What helped me alot was a got a notebook and wrote down what time it was on one page about half way down the page I wrote down another time say thirty min later and I told myself if you really want to smoke then wait till …. And I would write down all my feelings in the space between and when that next time came I would make it stretch another thirty min. After the first day I streched my time to an hour difference and so on. It really helped me. e-mail me if you have any questions.

October 29, 2009 4:19 am | #4May you read some article about the addiction:
Addiction means making a bad habit of something. Any kind of addiction is bad. Making our body habitual to something good or bad can take a form of an addiction. When a person converts his liking to a habit and habit to a necessity, it takes the shape of an addiction. Addictions are of many kinds such as an addiction of alcohol, coffee, tea, drugs, gambling, etc. The one who is addicted is a patient and should be handled with patience. The family of the patient has to suffer equally as the patient. Addiction is a turning point in the life of a person and a person starts thinking in a different way once gets addicted to something. The support and love of family and friends is very important for the patient so that he comes out of it.
The best thing to do would be to get help or treatment to help you give up the addictions. The success rate of people who seek help in giving up addictions is much greater than those who try it alone. Look for a program that is aimed at the addiction, such as Alcoholics Anonymous for an alcohol addiction. There are also counselors or therapists that can help give up addictions. Look online for programs or counselors in your area that specialize in addiction.

October 29, 2009 5:00 am | #6I was fat, chain smoked, and drank like a fish, but I decided enough was enough. Four years later and I feel pretty good about myself, a lot healthier too.
It definitely helps having a good support network, but take it at your own pace.
All the best.
i just took a psychology class and one thing we learned was addictions, the best way is to first ween yourself off of what ever it is because if you stop cold turkey you get withdraws and they are not fun , but if you are without that thing for 21 days your addiction is usually broken… i tried to give up caffiene for lent and had withdraw from it, its not fun( had to break my vow and go back to drinking it)
October 29, 2009 5:51 am | #7I think you should overcome your addictions one at a time.
October 29, 2009 6:00 am | #8Have confidence in yourself and scatch off each addiction you have overcome on the list.
But you have to make the decision to quit your addictions because you can not overcome them if you have no will to put in the effort.
Cold turkey
October 29, 2009 6:14 am | #9Detox! Fruits & veggies raw only for one week, no smoke, pills, alcohol, etc. WATER ONLY to drink, nothing whatsoever from a box, bottle or a can.
Sleep most of the 1st 3 days.
After that week ease into cooked food but healthy stuff only.
Regular exercise will keep the urge to smoke at bay a bit.
AA is good if you’re a heavy drinker.
NEVER give up heavy metal.

pick up a healthy alternative, like running. Everytime you crave what you’re addicted to, just run.
October 29, 2009 7:27 am | #12I think the best way is to give everything up all at once. If you drop some, you’ll only get more addicted to the others.
October 29, 2009 7:42 am | #13Everything…..just go do the total opposite. That way, if you fail at one, you still can be proud that you havent failed at all of them.
